Protection of victims of cybercrime and saving millions for ransom payments
A new malware decryption tool has been released in recent days, available for free on the NoMoreRansom
website ( www.nomoreransom.org ), and is about the latest version of GandCrab, one of the most profitable
malware-like ransomware software to date.
This tool was developed by the Romanian Police in cooperation with the Bitdefender Internet Security Company
and Europol in cooperation with the Law Enforcement Authorities of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom, USA, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands and Cyprus.
In addition to versions 1, 4 and the original version 5, the new tool also decrypts versions from 5.0.4 to 5.1, the latest
version developed by cybercriminals.
The GandCrab ransomware has overtaken all of its kind in 2018, infecting more than half a million victims since it was
first identified in January.
In October 2018, a decryption tool was released, covering two versions of the particular Ransomware, which followed
the previous February 2018 release. After being downloaded more than 400,000 times so far, these two tools have
helped around 10,000 victims to restore their encrypted files, saving about $ 5 million in ransom payments.
Cybercriminals behind the GandCrab ransomware have since released new versions of their own, but they are
covered by the tool they have just released.
Recall that the best treatment for Ransomware malware remains prevention. It is recommended that users
periodically use multi-level security solutions, back up frequently, and avoid opening attachments from unknown senders.
