Increased number of complaints in relation to a specific form of electronic fraud have been received lately by the Police and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, so the public is asked to be particularly cautious.
In this form of online fraud, criminals send a message by e-mail to potential victims, claiming that they violated their email and have access to their computer. Next, they claim that the access they have achieved on the victim's computer, they also have access to data on him and require the victim to pay money in kryptonomismatos form, in particular electronic purse (wallet), in the form of ransom. If the victim does not pay these ransoms, they threaten to share his data with other people.
The police invite the public, if they receive such emails, not to reply to the sender and not to pay any amount of money. Additionally, they will need to change their password and install the latest kind of malware protection programs. At the same time they will have to install the latest updates on their computer's operating system.
In any case, the public and companies likely to be victims of such fraud may contact the Police and the Anti-Corruption Bureau for a complaint. This communication can also be done electronically via the online platform for online crime reporting.
