EASTER FIRE & TREE CUTTING WARNING

From Cyprus Mail 25/4/16 - article written by Annette Chrysostomou

The forestry department on Monday said it was deeply concerned about the illegal felling of trees which occurs every year over Easter season during the traditional bonfire or ‘lampratzia’ period.
In a statement they reminded the public that written permission from the forestry department is necessary to cut down forest and non fruit trees, even on privately owned land.

The department has asked local authorities and individuals to report any incidents involving tree felling immediately to the local forestry offices or police so that they can be investigated and those breaking the law can be prosecuted.

The public have been urged to avoid lighting fires in the countryside, avoid using tools which might spark or flame and avoid throwing away lit cigarette butts in the countryside and the forest.   Those who see smoke or fire in or near a forest are asked to contact the nearest forest station or call 1407 or 112 without delay.
