The Department of Road Transport is moving from paper to plastic, and driver’s licences will be issued in “credit card” form from Monday 29 June - paper licences will gradually be replaced as they expire.
The older style licences will still be valid up until their expiry date but anyone wishing to transfer their licence to the new format prior to expiry may do so and pay a fee of €40.
The new credit card style licences will carry a picture of the driver, as well as standardised information to comply with EU legislation.
