DANGEROUS BUILDINGS IN CYPRUS - PREVENTION MUST START WITH PROPER MANAGEMENT

DANGEROUS BUILDINGS IN CYPRUS - PREVENTION MUST START WITH PROPER MANAGEMENT -  Cyprus Property News 17/10 by Panayiotis Peklivana

Cyprus is debating what to do about dangerous and jointly owned buildings. Authorities, lawmakers and property professionals are considering inspections, enforcement and changes to the rules governing jointly owned developments.

Those discussions matter. But I believe they risk starting too late.

By the time a building is officially judged dangerous, years of neglected repairs, poor financial planning and disputes over communal charges may already have taken their toll. We should also ask a harder question: how can we stop buildings reaching that point?

I believe part of the answer lies in how we manage buildings every day.

COAST UNDER PRESSURE AS CYPRUS MPs PUSH FOR A 100 metre BUILDING BAN - Cyprus Property News 20/10 by Pavlos Neofytou

“It is unthinkable that people should feel the coastline is gradually closing off behind private developments, or that free access to the sea could become a privilege. Development is necessary, but it must have limits. One of those limits must be meaningful protection for the coastal zone.”

Cyprus’ beaches are facing mounting pressure from development and environmental damage. In places, the coastline is gradually being hemmed in by private projects.

NON-EU PARCEL VOLUMES DROP 35 PER CENT AS CYPRIOT SHOPPERS ADAPT TO CUSTOMS CHARGES

NON-EU PARCEL VOLUMES DROP 35 PER CENT AS CYPRIOT SHOPPERS ADAPT TO CUSTOMS CHARGES - Cy Mail 22/10 by Souzana Psara

Cyprus is receiving up to 35 per cent fewer parcels from outside the European Union, although the volume of goods being imported has barely changed, as shoppers adjust to new customs charges ahead of a further increase on November 1.

The latest figures from the Customs Department point to a change in purchasing habits rather than a corresponding decline in demand, with consumers increasingly combining several products into a single shipment.

Customs Department spokesman Giorgos Constantinou has told Politis that parcels arriving from third countries have fallen by 30 to 35 per cent since the EU introduced a temporary €3 customs duty on July 1.

NO MORE FREE RIDES IN THE LIFT AS CYPRUS TACKLES COMMUNAL FEE DODGERS

NO MORE FREE RIDES IN THE LIFT AS CYPRUS TACKLES COMMUNAL FEE DODGERS - Cy Mail 22/10- by Souzana Psara

Cyprus apartment owners could find it harder to sell a property while communal fees remain unpaid, under proposed reforms that would give management committees more leverage over outstanding bills and introduce a €20 annual charge per unit.

The changes are intended to tackle a familiar problem in jointly owned buildings: one neighbour does not pay, the lift still needs servicing, and everyone else is left wondering who will cover the shortfall. However, the legislation has not been passed, and the new fee is not currently payable.

Following discussions in parliament on October 15, the Interior Ministry and the five district local government organisations (EOAs) moved closer to an agreement on the proposed system. The district bodies would eventually supervise jointly owned buildings and their management committees, with January 1, 2029 the target for transferring responsibilities, provided the necessary preparations are completed.

HADASSAH LIMASSOL CENTRE 'HOLDS ONLY IMAGING LICENCE' HEALTH MINISTRY SAYS - Cy Mail 22/10 by James Morphakis

The health ministry is examining complaints about the Hadassah Medical Centre in Limassol, which holds only an imaging centre licence despite advertising cardiology assessments and rehabilitation programmes.

Health ministry deputy permanent secretary Elisavet Constantinou told Politis that new complaints about the centre had recently been received.

She said it has no hospital licence or any other licence to operate as a healthcare facility.
