The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, announced the expansion of the Child Allowance, with the inclusion of an additional 17,000 families among the beneficiaries, but also with an increase in both the amount of the benefit and the income limits, in a video message.

Specifically, President Christodoulidis stated that the income criteria for all families are being increased. "In particular, the maximum income limits for families with three and four dependent children are now set at €90,000 and €100,000 respectively, thus satisfying the request for support for middle-class families, while, as we decided from 2025 for families with five or more dependent children, there are no income criteria," he said. "In addition, with our decision, long-term distortions are addressed, with the most important being the non-interruption of support in cases of a small increase in family income," he noted.

The U.N. General Assembly has backed a move away from the widely used Mercator map towards the Equal Earth projection, which shows the relative size of continents more accurately.

The non-binding resolution, led by Togo and supported by the African Union, passed with 164 votes in favor, one against, and six abstentions.

Projects worth €3.5 billion are expected to be carried out across Cyprus during the EU’s next seven-year funding period, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Saturday, calling on local authorities to prepare projects in time for government approval by September 2027.

Speaking at the inauguration of the revamped traditional centre of Meniko, Christodoulides said around €2.5 billion would come through the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034, including cohesion and other funds, with another €1 billion coming from national contributions.

Cyprus Schengen bid could unlock tourism and investment benefits

President Nikos Christodoulides’ meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa on Friday, followed by his call for a political decision on Cyprus’ Schengen bid “as soon as possible”, has placed the island’s push to join Europe’s border-free zone firmly on the European agenda, with accession potentially bringing significant benefits for tourism, investment and business mobility.

Christodoulides said after the meeting that he had raised Cyprus’ “desire and readiness” for full accession, pointing to a European Commission evaluation which he said had confirmed the country’s preparedness and recommended that the process be completed as a priority.
