Cyprus’ new-home market split sharply along district lines in the first half of 2026, with Nicosia recording the most sales, Limassol attracting the largest share of spending and Paphos posting the highest house prices.

According to Landbank Analytics, 3,594 off-plan apartments and houses were sold for a combined €1.149 billion during the six-month period.

The islandwide totals were first released in July, but the latest breakdown shows how sharply prices, property types and demand differed from one area to another.

The audit office is preparing a report examining the lists used to identify 1974 prisoners of war and the payment of relevant benefits.

Speaking to the Cyprus Mail on Wednesday, the office affirmed that the auditor-general Andreas Papaconstantinou has received reports on the matter and that the office’s findings are expected to be published soon.

Cyprus travellers can pay to shorten security and passport queues, but the same words mean very different things from one airport to another

Fast Track sounds reassuringly simple until a passenger pays for it and discovers that the queue it skips is not the queue holding them up.

At Larnaca Airport, the useful question is not whether there is an express lane. There is. The question is which part of the journey it covers. A traveller may still have to check in a bag, clear security, pass border control and wait at the gate. Paying to move more quickly through one of those stages does nothing to the other three.

The British bases’ police force on Thursday said that it has launched an operation aimed at tackling the phenomenon of illegal hunting.

The operation, named “Operation Hunter”, is, according to the bases’ police force, “designed to prevent and detect poaching, the illegal training of hunting dogs, and other related offences”.

It said that the operation is being carried out in coordination with the bases’ administration’s environment department, as well as the Republic of Cyprus’ police and game service.

Mustafa Oz, the captain of the ferry which sank off the coast of Kyrenia, bought his Honduran captain’s licence for $3,500, a police representative said in court on Thursday.

Oz appeared before the Turkish Cypriot Kyrenia district court for the second time on Thursday, with the representative informing the court that Oz had said under questioning that he had initially obtained a licence in Turkey, but that it had become invalid after he did not work as a boat captain for 10 years.

The Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP Limassol) is creating new digital products for the Kourion archaeological site, using three-dimensional reconstructions and artificial intelligence, with support from the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

Beijing has proceeded to impose a 20% tax on income from dividends and additional remuneration received by foreign citizens from foreign-interest enterprises in the Chinese market.

The measure went into effect on Tuesday, according to a joint statement from China's Ministry of Finance and the State Tax Administration.

Chinese tax law has for years provided for a 20% rate on these incomes. However, since 1994 a temporary exemption for foreign citizens had been approved, as part of Beijing's effort to strengthen the opening of the economy and attract foreign investment.

With the activation of the measure, the tax exemption that remained in force for more than three decades ends.
