INFLATIONARY EFFECT ON EATING OUT, GROOMING AND SOCIAL PROTECTION

Beyond the precision of everyday necessities that brings households to their knees every month, everything included in an outing has become more expensive, from coffee and ice cream to a meal at a restaurant and takeaway food services.

The data of the Statistical Service are revealing how expensive prices have become if one wants to go outside his home and enjoy some things, for which until a few years ago, prices were largely immaterial.

The trademark of summer, ice cream, its prices (reference month August) increased 21.5% year-on-year from 5.6% last year, while prices in restaurants, cafes and cafes appreciated 4.6% this year from 9.1% last year and 1.5% in 2021. Dance center prices rose 4% in August year-on-year from 8% last year and 1.4% in 2021.

Prices for fast food and take away food services were up 6.5% in August compared to an increase of 12.9% last year and 1.6% in 2021, prices at canteens appreciated 4.6% from 6.9% last year and a price decrease of 0.1% in 2021. The price of beer rose 7.5% in August against a rise of 5.8% last year and a decrease of 0.3% in 2021, prices in spirits and liqueurs increased 6.1% compared to a rise of 1.2% last year and a negative change of 0.6% in 2021. The price of coffee became particularly salty, rising 14% against a 13.5% increase last year and 0.2% in 2021. Beverage prices were not spared from price increases that are up 13.3% in August compared to a rise of 10.3% last year and 0.7% in 2021.

Prices for entertainment and sports services rose 3.8% in August year-on-year compared to an 8.6% rise last year and 0.8% in 2021. Prices at hotels, motels and inns rose 10.4% in August year-on-year versus a rise of 14.6% last year and 4.5% in 2021. But there is also something where their prices stagnated or fell marginally. Package holidays in Greece had zero change as last year and in 2021, while for abroad prices fell 0.2% in August on an annual basis compared to a rise of 14.3% last year and a decrease of 3.7% in 2021. Another category whose prices fell is air tickets with the change being -7.9% in August compared to an increase of 33.8% last year and an increase of 5.9% in 2021.

Grooming also costs

Beyond outings, however, there is also pampering. Prices at salons for women rose 4.9% in August compared to a rise of 8.4% last year and 3.2% in 2021. Prices in hair salons for men and children showed an increase of 0,8% in August compared to 6,1% last year and zero change in 2021. Prices of personal hygiene and wellness items rose 5.4% in August year-on-year compared to a 3.8% rise last year and a 0.8% price decline in 2021.

But there are also other costs associated with social protection. Prices for social protection services rose 5.8% in August year-on-year, compared with a rise of 2.5% last year and 2.3% in 2021. Prices of childcare services rose 4.2% in August compared to a rise of 0.6% last year and 2.1% in 2021. Prices for nursing homes for older people rose 4.4% in August year-on-year compared to a rise of 3.6% last year and 3.3% in 2021. Regarding prices for home insurance, the increase was 8.5% this year compared to a rise of 0.5% last year and zero change in 2021. Prices related to health insurance increased 1.8% compared to zero change last year and in 2021.
