The 82-year-old accused of attempted murder against a 67-year-old man will appear at the criminal court in Limassol for his trial on July 17.

The incident took place on June 11 around 7.15pm, when the 82-year-old man contacted the police by phone and reported that he had shot an intruder who had entered the yard of his home and was allegedly attempting to steal electrical cables.

The elderly suspect reported he had fired his shotgun in the air, however, he injured the man, who attempted to flee.

Police went to the scene where they located the injured 67-year-old man, who had been shot in the chest.

He was taken by ambulance to Limassol general hospital and then to a private clinic, where he underwent surgery and was kept for further treatment. His condition was described as critical.

On Thursday, the court will decide whether the 82-year-old will remain in custody until his trial on July 17.

A total of 37 migrants arrived in the free Famagusta district on Wednesday night. Specifically, at around 22:15 on June 21, a vessel was detected by the radar of the Republic, 13 nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco.

Specifically, thirty minutes after midnight on June 22, the vessel entered the territorial waters of the Republic and attempts were made to identify it, but without response.

Then a boat of the Port and Maritime Police approached the unknown boat and it was found that it was a wooden boat about 7 meters long, with 37 people on board, including 28 men, 3 women and 6 children, all from Syria. They said they departed from Tartus, Syria, paying €2,500 each. The boat along with the migrants were taken to the Ayia Napa marina. During their interrogation, testimony was obtained against two people, aged 33 and 31, that they were the pilots of the vessel.

The two people were arrested in the morning by members of the Famagusta ICF for flagrant offenses and within the day arrest warrants are expected to be obtained for the offences of illegal entry into the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, facilitation of illegal entry of third country persons into the Republic, assisting a third country person with intent and with the aim of making a profit, transporting a person by water in a safe and overloaded vessel and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The rest of the migrants were transferred to the Pournara Temporary Accommodation Centre in Kokkinotrimithia. Tomorrow the two men will be brought before the Famagusta District Court for detention orders. The case is being investigated by the Famagusta ICF.

Police in Paphos located and arrested yesterday the burglar who broke into an optical shop at dawn last Sunday and when spotted by the owners stabbed one of them in his attempt to escape from the scene.

He is a 54-year-old man who was taken to police after reviewing video footage from surveillance cameras and other evidence and testimonies they now possessed. The suspect was taken to the Paphos Police Headquarters where he was detained and today he will be brought before the Pafos District Court for a detention order.

The burglary and theft from the optical shop took place at dawn last Cyprus. The alarm system that the store has, which is connected to the owners' home, sounded at five in the morning.

Father and son, aged 56 and 27 respectively, went to the store after informing the police. When they arrived at the scene, the attacker had fled the scene of the burglary, but was spotted nearby hiding in a field. Father and son tried to restrain him, but the suspect recovered a knife resulting in an injury to the 27-year-old in the arm and after getting on a bicycle he fled in an unknown direction and was wanted.

The 27-year-old went to Paphos Hospital where he had six stitches on the wound.

From the examinations that followed, it emerged that the burglar took from the optician store about 100 pairs of glasses, several of which were found at the scene where he was hiding, apparently leaving them in an attempt to escape from there. According to what appeared in the closed circuit of the business, the perpetrator was aged 50-55, had his face covered with a surgical mask, wore a hat, black jacket and black shorts, and entered the business after shattering glass on a side wall.

From these data, the Pafos Police led to the arrest of the 54-year-old suspect and investigations are now focused on the stolen property.

A 34-year-old resident of the area was arrested last night by police on suspicion of placing the explosive device in a car in Argaka at dawn on Wednesday.

The device was placed in a 27-year-old man's car which was parked outside his residence, near the community's Primary School and from the explosion the vehicle was almost completely damaged, while it also caused disturbance in the community since the explosion was particularly felt in almost the entire residential area.

The police were led based on information and testimonies to the 34-year-old, who was located and arrested last night in the area of Polis Chrysochous. 

Her arrest was followed by searches of her residence, as well as her family home, where a quantity of cannabis with a gross weight of 39 grams and strains of a cannabis plant were found in a nylon bag.The 34-year-old was also arrested for investigating a case of possession of drugs with intent to supply to another person.

At the same time, the Police continue investigations and laboratory tests, while further statements are being taken in order to enable the authorities to form a picture of the causes of this criminal act.

An African who had to leave the accommodation facility for minors in Kato Paphos was furious when he was informed about it.

The African grabbed a knife and fork and attacked a worker at the facility. The police intervened and he was eventually arrested.
