CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 21 June 2023

An explosive device completely destroyed a car in Argaka at dawn today.

The device was placed in a 27-year-old man's car that was parked outside his residence and the explosion caused almost complete damage, while causing disturbance in the community, since the explosion was particularly felt in almost the entire residential area.

Police made a new arrest yesterday in the case of obtaining temporary protection status for foreigners with false documents, in an attempt to dismantle the ring that has been operating lately.

He is a Syrian wanted in the case, with the number of those arrested reaching 11, while eight others are still being sought. Members of the ICF Police Headquarters handcuffed him yesterday and it is expected that today he will be taken to the Nicosia District Court to request a detention order.

The police have a picture of what exactly happened, since, according to "F" information, the 65-year-old certifying officer who is detained as a suspect for her act as an intermediary, has spoken to the authorities and is cooperating with the investigators, unlike the 40-year-old officer of the Civil Registry and Migration Department who observes the right to remain silent.

According to testimonies, Syrians, in order to secure temporary protection status in Cyprus, initially gave €250 along with their application to intermediaries. However, there is another testimony according to which, when they received the special paper from the Civil Registry and Migration Department, they gave another middleman who is wanted another €1,500.  All this will be examined by the investigators to see how much money was given and where it ended up.

According to the same information of "F", the case came to light when this officer of the Migration Department asked for the "forms" filled out by the Syrians and took them for examination, while they were held by other officers. This aroused suspicion and as a result tests were carried out and it was determined that something was wrong.

The investigations, as "F" wrote yesterday, go back six months to see how many cases this officer has examined and whether they are "problematic". Key to the case is another Syrian who is wanted and also acted as an intermediary in the case.

The ICF Headquarters investigates serious offenses such as conspiracy to commit a felony, circulation of false documents and corruption, while investigations are also monitored by the Ministry of Interior, to determine what internal checks are needed to prevent such rackets from happening again.

A police spokesperson told us that it is not excluded that after the expiration of the detention orders of the suspects, their renewal will be requested, since investigations are ongoing and a series of files concerning applications for temporary protection as refugees mainly by Syrians are being examined.
