The man accused of beating a 44-year-old Congolese woman holding her infant in her arms last July was sentenced by the Larnaca District Court to 29 months of immediate imprisonment.

The 44-year-old was found guilty on 4 counts, including assault and causing actual harm to the 29-year-old. The Court found a racist motive in the defendant by condemning his act of beating a woman holding her infant in her arms.

The high-profile case came to light after a video was posted on Twitter showing the beating of the 29-year-old. The complainant, reporting the case, said she had gone to the 43-year-old's house to ask for money back for a defective car he sold her. According to her testimony, the defendant racially shouted at her, "This is my country and I will do whatever I want."

The defendant then came down from the apartment building where he lives and after insulting the 29-year-old kicked her in the back and punched her, as she had her infant in her arms.
