As of February 1st, the regulation that determines the mandatory use of a protective helmet, in accordance with the Legislation, comes into force for cyclists and bicycle passengers.
The Police announces that on December 30, 2022, a notification of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles (K.D.P. 523/2022) was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic, concerning the approval of a specific type of protective helmet for a cyclist or bicycle passenger.
According to the notification, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles has determined that the type of protective helmet for cyclists and bicycle passengers should comply with the standard CYS EN 1078: 2012 + A1, explicitly state that it is intended at least for cyclists and bear the marking of Declaration of Conformity: CE.
It is also specified that alternatively, for young children up to 14 years old, the type of protective helmet for cyclists and bicycle passengers, should comply with the standard CYS EN 1080: 2013 and bear the marking of Declaration of Conformity: CE.
Under the legislation, the obligation to wear a safety helmet by a cyclist and bicycle passenger exists from February 1, 2023. As of February 1, the Police will carry out traffic checks, as well as complaints of relevant violations, with the aim of implementing and complying with the provisions of the Legislation on the use of a protective helmet by cyclists and bicycle passengers.
In case of commission of the offense and conviction, the offender will be subject to a fine not exceeding five hundred euros (€500). The offence is settled out of court with the amount of €50.
