Violations related to undeclared work and non-licensing for the employment of third-country nationals have arisen in some cases after interviews with 94 distributors working on behalf of an online platform, the Director of the Department of Labor Relations of the Ministry of Labour, Andy Apostolou, said on Wednesday. Distributors had recently mobilised to protest their working conditions.
Specifically, Mr. Apostolou said that the preliminary results of the investigation revealed three cases out of 94, of undeclared work, while two of the companies that employ the distributors, had not received a special permit to employ third-country nationals, he said.
Mr. Apostolou said that most of the investigation has been completed, while now the investigation is underway regarding whether, for those who have contracts, all the conditions were met, and whether they were getting the salary declared in these contracts. So far, he added, nothing has emerged to indicate that they were paid anything different from what those contracts provided for.
Where there are violations, the procedure for imposing fines will proceed, in accordance with the legislation, noted Mr. Apostolou.
It is recalled that today the trade unions and the employer side entered into a cycle of intensive consultations under the auspices of the Department of Labour Relations, with the aim of reaching an agreement on the working conditions of distributors on online platforms, with a view to the end of January 2023. After the decision to start the dialogue, the distributors unanimously decided to end their strike, after nine days of mobilizations.
