PAPHOS HARBOUR - BEGGARS ANNOYING CUSTOMERS

Filenews 9 June 2022 - by Dora Christodoulou

A phenomenon that until now we know from crowded places in Athens, that of beggars who enter businesses and ask for money from customers either by playing music or offering some products, has arrived in recent days in the tourist area of Pafos, causing already strong reactions of businessmen.

These are groups of foreigners, mainly gypsies, as reported by businessmen of the port and the pier of Pafos, who in pairs enter in recent days in recreation centres, with one of them playing a musical instrument and the second holding a small box for contributions from customers. These individuals, say business owners and employees, then move to tables where there are customers, asking for money and creating in most cases feelings of embarrassment or discomfort of customers.

"We are forced to intervene to remove them, since it is not right nor nice to annoy the customer while eating or drinking," confirmed businessmen. "The problem is even becoming more and more widespread in the last week, with the more frequent occurrence in the port area of such people, while until recently no such practice had ever appeared."

The businessmen of the coastal front stress that they proceeded to the relevant complaint in order for the Police, the Municipal Traffic Police and other competent authorities to intervene while there is still time, before the situation leads to practices that constitute defamation and devaluation of the tourist product, as they stress.
