PROTEST AT THE RIK FOR 'EL DIABLO' - WHAT THE MEMORANDUM SAYS

 Filenews 5 March 2021

A protest event on the occasion of the song that will represent Cyprus in the upcoming Eurovision contest, is organized by the Orthodox Youth of Cyprus along with other organized groups, on Saturday at 11 a.m. outside the premises of the Cyprus Radio Foundation.

In an open letter-memorandum to the Chairman of the Board Andreas Franco and the Director General of the RIK Grigoris Maliotis, they state:

"With a feeling of anger and sadness we learned the content, meaning and symbolism of this year's song that supposedly wants to represent Cyprus in the above contest. In order to avoid any misunderstandings, we consider that this competition, in the past, was a nice artistic competition for the promotion of the musical culture and identity of each participating state, but lately it has become a neo-classical celebration where the subculture and the fall (moral and spiritual) triumph and everything is sacrificed unscathed on the altar of profit.

In the context of the now degraded prestige of this competition, the last participations of Cyprus were tolerated in the past, which spoke generally about love and superficial feelings. They had nothing special to show for it, but on the other hand, to be fair, they did not provoke the national religious feelings of our people.

With this letter, and on behalf of tens of thousands of our fellow citizens, we invite you to cancel Cyprus' participation in this year's competition or if possible find a replacement, or give another song to Mrs. Tsagrinou. This song "el diablo" is a hymn to dark forces, proclaims man's allegiance to darkness and humiliation (after all, you said it yourself that it refers to Stockholm syndrome) and offends our people who have been prospering from Greek Orthodox values and principles for thousands of years now. In a climate of global terrorism caused by a virus with a mortality rate of 0.002 percent, with oppressed and unemployed millions of citizens in the EU, with unconstitutional decrees and strong repression, representing Cyprus, especially in such circumstances, a song that praises and beautifuls "submission to the evil dynast" and contains dark and subconscious Satanist symbolisms, is the least provocative and underestimation of the intelligence and dignity of citizens.

In the year in which we celebrate the 200th birthday of the start of the National Paliggenesis, where Again Cyprus was thunderously present, where the militant thieves were fighting "Pro Faith and Patriarch", it is a great shame that you will pre-select and support a song suspicious, strange and dark to represent Cyprus.

With this Memorandum we express the dissatisfaction and indignation of the majority of Cypriots and we are trying to do the right thing. This song does not represent us, it does not express us and further it is a direct challenge to the theophilic and Christian feelings of the vast majority of citizens.

We recall what the late Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias said, "If God is with us, none of us."
