YOUNG TEENS BEHIND STRING OF VEHICLE THEFTS

Cyprus Mail 13 February 2021 - by Evie Andreou

Police on Saturday said they were about to solve several cases of recent motorcycle thefts and car break ins in Nicosia after catching two teenage boys, 13 and 15, riding a stolen motorcycle.

According to the police, the two teens, along with another young person were seen by officers at around 11pm on Friday riding a motorcycle in Limassol Avenue in Nicosia.

It later emerged the 13-year-old was driving the motorcycle and had the other two as passengers. None of them was wearing a crash helmet while the vehicle’s lights were off. When they were signalled by the officers to stop, they got off the motorcycle and tried to escape on foot.

Officers were able to stop the 15-year-old who was arrested on the spot after kicking and damaging the patrol car in his attempt to escape their grip.

A few minutes later the 13-year-old was spotted on the roof of an apartment building nearby. It is believed he was the driver of the motorcycle, police said.

The motorcycle had been reported as stolen on February 7.

The two teens were taken to the Nicosia headquarters where they gave statements in the presence of their mothers. They allegedly admitted to several motorcycle thefts and stealing from cars in the Nicosia district.

The 13-year-old was allowed to leave as he was too young to be detained but the 15-year-old was taken into custody, police said.
