SECURITY TIPS FOR TRAVELLING, OR ON EXCURSIONS

From Cyprus Police

We are going through the summer holidays and many of our fellow citizens have gone to various tourist resorts, mainly on the coast, but also in the mountainous areas.

During their trips to the beaches or in the mountainous excursions, there is always the risk of theft of property, such as money, mobile phones and bags or wallets that contain the personal documents of their owners, while there is a risk of possible burglary.

Below are some simple precautionary measures against such incidents of theft, which citizens can take to more effectively protect their property, in addition to the efforts made by the Police.

At the hotel or in the tourist apartment

When we leave our room we make sure that the windows and doors are closed and locked.
We do not leave exposed or unsafe places, money, jewelry or other valuables and important documents.
Items of value can be left for safekeeping in the reception area or in another specially designed area of the hotel or accommodation. Such accommodations usually have a safe in the reception area to store their customers' property.

On the beach or on the picnic:

We avoid taking unnecessary cash or valuables with us.
We only take the required amount of money we need for the one trip.
The rest of our money, or property, can be stored in the reception area or in another insured area of the hotel or accommodation we live/stay in.
Do not carry items of great value on the beach or on excursions, such as jewelry, watches, cameras, mobile phones, etc. In the event that such items are transported, they shall in no case be left unattended.
Our personal property is constantly in our field of vision.
Where possible, cooperate with other bathers or hikers to monitor each other's property.

In general, the public is urged to be vigilant and to work closely with the Police and, if they notice persons or vehicles suspiciously wandering, to immediately inform the local Police Station or to contact the Citizen Communication Line at 1460.
