NEW COMMANDER IN UNFICYP - THIS IS MAJOR GENERAL MOHAMMAD MINHAZUL 'ALAM - Filenews 9/4
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced today the appointment of Major General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul 'Alam to the post of Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
Major General Minhazul 'Alam succeeds Major General Ernebet Batsuri from Mongolia, to whom the Secretary-General expressed his deep appreciation for his dedication and services.
The new Commander brings more than 30 years of experience in leadership and command positions in the Bangladesh Army. He most recently joined the Army's Training and Doctrine Command as Commander-in-Chief, previously serving as Commander-in-Chief of the 10th Infantry Division and Area Commander at Cox Bazaar during 2024-2026, as well as Commander of the Armed Forces Command and Staff School in 2024.
In his previous career, he held multiple administrative and staff positions in infantry formations, including duties in counter-terrorism, homeland security, disaster response and intelligence-based operations.
He also served in UN peacekeeping missions, as a Sector Commander in the United Nations Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic during 2020-2021 and as a military observer in the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor from 1999-2000.
Major General Minhazul 'Alam holds a PhD in International Relations from Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh, a Master's degree in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University in Washington, a Master's degree in Defense Studies from the National University of Bangladesh and an MBA from the Royal University of Dhaka. In addition to his native language, he is fluent in English.
