FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE IS SWEEPING - CASES IN ANOTHER 7 UNITS - ANOTHER 2,610 SHEEP AND GOATS TO BE SLAUGHTERED - Filenews 8/4
Cases of foot-and-mouth disease in 7 other livestock units were found today in the infected areas, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture.
The laboratory results showed seven (7) more positive sheep and goat units (approximately 2610 sheep and goats in total), of which two (2) in Dromolaxia Meneou, one (1) in Kiti, one (1) in Athienou and three (3) in Geri, thus reaching 66 infected units in Larnaca (57) and Nicosia (9).
The second phase of cattle vaccination reached 65.35% and in sheep and goats 38.75% of the animal population respectively. As for pigs, 73% of the units located within the infected areas have been vaccinated so far.
Compensation payments continue for the quantities of milk that has been destroyed by the contaminated units, while at the same time the payment of compensation for the feed destroyed by the contaminated units has begun.
