In an interview with Andreas Pibishis and Stelios Marathovouniotis, the first ambassador of Kazakhstan to Cyprus, Nikolai Zumakanov, explains that the opening of the Kazakh embassy in Nicosia, 33 years after the start of diplomatic relations – is a strategic choice that strengthens his country's national interests and upgrades bilateral cooperation. In his first interview with a Cypriot media outlet, Mr. Zumakanov refers to both the prospects for deepening relations between Cyprus and Kazakhstan and the possibilities of tourism development, underlining that the permanent diplomatic presence changes the dynamics and opens new channels of contact between the two countries.
– What tourist attractions can Kazakhstan offer to Cypriot visitors?
– Kazakhstan is a country with impressive natural diversity and we will be happy to welcome more visitors from Cyprus to discover it. For those who desire a change from the Mediterranean coast, our landscapes offer a completely different experience. The Tian Shan and Altai Mountains offer excellent conditions for skiing in winter and beautiful hikes in summer. Near Almaty, resorts like Shymbulak combine modern facilities with stunning landscapes, while nearby alpine lakes showcase untouched nature. The Almaty region also has the Charyn Gorge, often described as a smaller Grand Canyon, while the northern part offers the forests and lakes of Burabay. Travellers interested in unique landscapes can explore Mangystau in the Caspian Sea, known for its surreal rock formations and open plateau.
Kazakhstan also has important historical and cultural attractions. The southern regions preserve Silk Route monuments, such as the Mausoleum of Hoxha Ahmed Yasawi in Turkestan, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as well as ancient cities such as Otrar and Taraj. And for those drawn to contemporary architecture, Astana offers a futuristic skyline that reflects the country's rapid growth.
We intend to actively promote these destinations. We will work with tour operators, support new organised trips and organise familiarisation trips so that Cypriot travel agencies can see Kazakhstan's tourism potential first-hand. We are confident that, with greater awareness, many Cypriots will be eager to explore a country so diverse in landscape, yet so familiar in its warmth and hospitality.
– Finally, how many Kazakh citizens live in Cyprus today?
– The number is relatively small, but it is increasing compared to the larger diaspora communities. According to the latest statistics provided by the Cypriot authorities, there are 555 Kazakh citizens who have permanent residence in Cyprus. These are people who have made Cyprus their permanent residence – some are professionals, some have businesses or have settled here with their families.
We will maintain close contact with our compatriots in Cyprus – one of the responsibilities of our new embassy is consular support and community involvement with the Kazakhs living here.
