 Pafos Live 17 June 2025

Mayor Phaedon Phaedon made very serious denunciations and revelations during today's session of the Parliament's Human Rights Committee. The committee dealt with the issue of drug use and trafficking within schools.

Among other things, Mr. Phaedon pointed out that in the Paphos district there is a specific drug dealer, who specializes in the recruitment of students, mainly female students. "It has been known to the authorities for years and they have not yet taken their measures," the Mayor said. Apart from this, Mr. Phaedon spoke about at least five schools in which drug trafficking is not just carried out but there is an organized structure for the sale of drugs. He also spoke about students who appear at school for 1-2 periods every day, the school administrations and teachers know this, as according to Mr. Phaedon "they know that these children are traders".

"An organized underworld has begun to be created in schools," Mr. Phaedon underlined. "There is indeed a problem with drugs in schools, and it is not only in the Paphos district," said the commander of the Police Department, Christos Andreou. He explained that there is a protocol of cooperation with schools. "We have links with schools, public and private secondary schools. Specifically, we have contacts with 157 school units," he said, adding that "in the current school year, 74 requests for assistance to school units, 120 contacts that the members of the YKAN had in the information base."

Data were also provided regarding drug seizures. Indicatively, it is mentioned that last year, the total quantities from the seizures for cannabis were 617 kilograms and 54 kilograms of cocaine.
