A new case of online fraud and extortion of a large amount of money is being investigated by the Police, following a complaint filed today with the ICF of Pafos, a 67-year-old man.

According to what the 67-year-old reported to the ICF, last July, he transferred a sum of money amounting to €200,000 from his bank account to an account that he believed belonged to a bank abroad, in order to buy and invest in bank bonds. However, as he later discovered, the account to which he sent the money did not belong to the banking institution, but to an unknown person, who deceived him.

The 67-year-old had previously searched for and located online the specific investment plan in bank bonds and via e-mail, contacted a person who presented himself to him as an officer of the banking institution and who used an e-mail account almost identical to the real e-mail of the banking institution. Through the email, the suspect told the 67-year-old the details of a bank account, to which the 67-year-old sent the amount of €200,000, for the purchase of bonds, but later realized that this is not the bank account of the banking institution, but belongs to an unknown suspicious beneficiary.

The case is being investigated by the ICF of Pafos.

On the occasion of this new case of electronic fraud, the Police once again calls on the public to be particularly careful in their electronic transactions.

In this form of fraud, perpetrators create and use e-mails that are almost identical to those of a real natural or legal person, partner or company. By contacting the fake e-mail and pretending to be the natural or legal person, partner or company concerned, the perpetrators claim that their bank account has been changed and request that any transactions or payments be made to a new account, the details of which they mention.

To avoid being deceived, the public is asked to always be very careful. Before proceeding with such transactions, it is encouraged to contact partners or companies by phone for verification. Such communication should always take place through telephone numbers, used in previous conversations with partners or companies, or through telephone numbers that are disclosed.
