The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) proceeded yesterday with the expulsion of the doctor who was convicted last week by the Court for indecent assault against his patients.

Following this development, the said doctor will not be able to offer his services through the General Healthcare System (GHS).

However, he has the right to practice medicine outside the system, unless the competent authorities of the Cyprus Medical Association proceed with revoking the professional license he holds.

The case of this particular doctor was discussed last Monday by the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament, whose members publicly demanded the revocation of the professional license by the Cyprus Medical Association.

The MPs emphasized that the said doctor had been convicted in the past for similar offenses but continued to practice medicine without any significant consequences.

During this session, the HIO explained that it is not the competent authority to prohibit any doctor from practicing medicine; however, it was clarified that the organization has the right to terminate contracts and expel GHS service providers from the system, which was done yesterday.
