Limassol is among the cities chosen by the European Platform NetZeroCities, for its proposal "We cool Limassol without emissions", which is the first step in the participation of the Limassol Municipality in the program for the 100 climate neutral and smart cities of the EU, until 2030.
According to an announcement by the Municipality, Limassol is among the leading European cities funded by the EU, following a competitive pan-European competition, to execute their climate change plans, through the Pilot Cities – NetZeroCities program.
"We undertook to put into practice ways to cool homes and other buildings in our city with less power consumption and therefore fewer pollutants," the statement said, adding that "this will be done in simple, smart and creative ways, a first step towards the green development of our city."
The whole project was undertaken by the Limassol Municipality in collaboration with the Cyprus Institute, the CUT, the ETEK and the Friends of the Earth, who will discuss with all stakeholders (government, professionals, individuals, scientists, citizens) and will design it in accordance with the "Limassol Climate Contract", which is being prepared with the close cooperation of the Municipality, special scientists and active citizens.
The Limassol Municipality underlines that the city is not a guinea pig but a guide and example for the rest of the cities of Cyprus and that, together with the other 99 European cities of the EU Cities Mission program, it will lead on the road to zero emissions by 2030.
