CONCERN EXPRESSED BY EDEK REGARDING PAPHOS HARBOUR WORKS

Filenews 7 March 2023 - by Dora Christodoulou

The municipal team of EDEK in the Municipality of Paphos expresses its strong concerns about the progress of the works underway on the Paphos coastal front. In its announcement, the municipal team of the party points out that the works are carried out by the Municipal Authority, without having previously informed and consulted with the shopkeepers involved, without timely and in writing informing the affected people about the relevant schedules and without observing the necessary safety and health measures, as well as the necessary traffic regulations.

The result of all this, EDEK argues, is to cause tension and confusion to those affected, but also to the dangers to the visitors of the area. The Municipal Group of EDEK was the only one that voted against this project, the announcement points out, considering that there were serious reasons for concern:

"We had expressed our concerns both in the session of 28 February 2022 and in the final session on the subject on 3 May 2022. Our concerns mainly concerned the following points: The timing and when the works should be carried out, the construction of the wall at the end to protect the project from erosion, but also the shops from bad weather and waves, as well as visitors. At the same time, our concerns concerned the final solution to the facades of the stores that seems to leave the affected shopkeepers in limbo, as it does not exist, and was never presented to the City Council or the affected shopkeepers."

The municipal councillors of EDEK in the Municipality of Paphos also point out that a small project to upgrade urban equipment resulted in a drastic change of the area, which should involve all stakeholders, affected shopkeepers, designers and the wider society of Paphos.

We believe that this issue in its entirety should be brought back immediately and discussed in the Municipal Council in an exclusive session, in which all stakeholders, the designers of the project as well as the affected shopkeepers will be invited to attend, concludes EDEK Paphos in its intervention.
