Cyprus ranks 7th among the EU countries in terms of the percentage of its citizens who rent their residence.
Specifically, according to Eurostat, 68.6% own a privately owned home while 31.4% rent.
More generally, in 2020, 69.7% of the population in the EU lived in privately owned housing compared to 30.3% who lived in rented housing.
Romania first
The highest percentages of ownership were observed in Romania, where 96% of the population lived in a privately owned dwelling, followed by Slovakia (92%), Hungary (91%) and Croatia (91%).
In all Member States, except Germany, ownership is more common. In the case of Germany, half the population lived in a rented dwelling. Also, ownership shares were lower in Austria (55%) and Denmark (59%).
