WILLS & SUCCESSION - NEW EU REGULATION 650/12 IN FORCE FROM 17 AUGUST 2015

It is understood there have been changes to the expat Will regulations in Cyprus in that the exclusion clause allowing UK citizens to opt out of the Cyprus Heirs succession law has been removed as from 3rd July. This can have an impact and even negate some current Wills by limiting and directing what can be left and proportions outside of the immediate family.

Fortunately, an EU law came into force today, 17 August, under EU Regulation 650/12, allowing residents of EU countries to elect under which country's law the Will can be executed.

The regulations are far-reaching and complicated, though much information is available if you search under these topics on the internet before you seek legal advice.

PLEASE DO NOT RUSH INTO TAKING ANY ACTION - THE POSITION, PARTICULARLY TAX IMPLICATIONS, IS UNCLEAR.   A PRESENTATION ON THE SUBJECT WILL BE ORGANISED FOR END OF SEPTEMBER TIME IF POSSIBLE.
